DOMESTIC.
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RETURNS.
In Rhode Island, the election of Electors was held on Friday, and the Adams Ticket, being the only one openly proposed, was elected without serious opposition.
Washington, Nov. 23.
Among the Members of Congress at present in the city, are Mr. Williams, Senator; and Mr. Rankin, Representative, from Mississippi; Mr. Thomas, Senator, from Illinois; Mr. Rose, of New York, Mr. Trimble, of Kentucky, Mr. Reynolds, of Tennessee, Mr. Thompson, of Georgia, Mr. Brent, of Louisiana--all Representatives. The Session commences on Monday week.
FROM THE WEST
By the Mail which arrived last night, we have received the following letter, from an indisputable source, which settles the question as to the vote of the state of Ohio.--The Electors, chosen in that State, by a plurality of votes, are those favourable to the Election of Mr. Clay to the Presidency.
"Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 12th, 1824.
"Knowing that you are anxious to obtain the earliest information of the result of the election for Electors of President and Vice President, in the several states, I take the liberty of communicating the result in Ohio, which was not fully and certainly ascertained until last night. The following is the state of the polls:
Ticket for Henry Clay, 19,265 votes
General Jackson, 18,489
J. Q. Adams, 12,280
Yours, &c."
We have received also, from Kentucky, several partial returns, which decide nothing. We have never doubted, however, that the whole vote of this state would be for Mr. Clay. The only electoral candidates voted for are favourable either to Mr. Clay or Gen. Jackson. In Louisville, the Jackson ticket received 465, and the Clay ticket 231 votes. In Frankfort, the Clay ticket received 347, and the Jackson ticket 105 votes. We have no other returns from this state worth mentioning.
No returns have yet reached us from any other Western State. Nat. Int.
Ohio--By last night's Western Mail, the complete official returns from Ohio were received. The result does not vary much from the statement we gave on Saturday. The whole number of votes given were 50,024, of these there were--
For Mr. Clay, 19,255
Gen. Jackson, 18,489
Mr. Adams, 12,280
Giving Mr. Clay a majority over Gen. Jackson of 766.
Kentucky--A few returns have been received from Kentucky. At Louisville, on the 8th inst. the votes were, for Mr. Clay 231, for Gen. Jackson 465; in Middletown, Clay 61, Jackson 29; in Franklin county, Clay 347, Jackson 105.
The Kentucky Gazette of the 11th gives no returns; but says--"The election in Kentucky closed yesterday, and as far as we can learn, the majority of Mr. Clay over Gen. Jackson is very great."
The next Western Mail will probably bring some returns from Indiana.--Nat. Journal.
Ohio--Official Returns.
By the mail of last night from the west we have received official accounts of the result of the Presidential election in Ohio. In the Columbus Gazette (the paper printed at the seat of Government in Ohio) we find the proclamation of the Governor, announcing the election of Wm. H. Harrison, and the other gentlemen composing the Clay Ticket of electors.
The aggregate official returns of votes, taken from the office of the Secretary of State, are as follow:
CLAY. JACKSON. ADAMS.
19,255 18,489 12,280
Clay's majority over Jackson 766.
Clay's majority over Adams 6975.
