You can pay if you wish.—The whigs say, that Gen. Briscoe's bill will destroy all the Banks that have violated their charters. They say, that if the banks are destroyed, they cannot collect, and consequently cannot redeem their notes, or promises to pay. Now, if the whig debtors of the banks are morally honest they can and will, seek out those persons who hold the paper of said banks, even though all legal force and binding be destroyed. Briscoe's bill does not destroy moral honesty—it will never prevent a debtor of a bank from paying the amount he may owe that bank to any creditor of said bank.—P. G. Correspondent.
From the sneering tone of the above paragraph, a stranger might infer that the debtors of the Banks were all Whigs, but to those conversant with the history of our country, it is well known that such is not the fact. GEN. BRISCOE is liable to these institutions as principal and endorser, for UPWARDS OF EIGHTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!! Now we ask our neighbor whether in the event of the passage of this bill, it is the intention of Gen. Briscoe to pay ONE DOLLAR of these liabilities? Answer us that!
JUDGE M'INTYRE is also liable to the banks for a large amount, should this bill pass will HE consider himself morally bound to pay one dollar to the banks or their creditors?
Answer us That!!
