RALEIGH, July 11 - (IP) - State Bureau of Investigation Chief Walter F. Anderson said he would reply late today to request that he take the job of State Prisons director.
He indicated his answer would be no.
Anderson went to Fort Bragg today to confer with military authorities about law enforcement during large scale army maneuvers to be held in the State. He left the prisons question to be answered when he returned.
Gov. Kerr Scott and Highway Commission Chairman Henry Jordan offered Anderson the prisons job Monday after Director John M. Gold announced that he is resigning to become city manager of Winston-Salem. Anderson conferred with Jordan yesterday and said afterward, "I am very happy where I am."
In his present post Anderson earns about $7,350 per year. As director of the Prisons Department, Gold made $9,000. However, the SBI functions under the attorney-general's office while the prisons directorship is a political job which will probably change hands when a new governor takes office 18 months from now.
