Facts About the War Eagle Mining District in Idaho.
THERE'S LOTS OF FREE GOLD
Encouraging Reports From the Salmon River District-Mining in Alaska-Other News.
The following is a well-written description of the mineral formation in which the War Eagle group of gold veins are situated, from the Idaho Hydraulic Gold Miner:
Lying four miles to the west of Salmon City and ranging from the head of the Leesburg basin in a northwesterly direction 40 miles to, and through the Pine creek country and varying from four to ten miles wide, exists a perfect gold formation of porphyritic granite metamorphosed.
The gold veins cutting through this formation carry a perfectly free milling quartz.
The veins are strong, well defined and clean cut, cutting the formation at right angles to the stratification of the formation. Each vein has a well defined gouge on either wall, and in no instance is the gold bearing quartz froze to the walls.
The veins are large, varying from three to 20 feet between walls. The largest veins have a trend of nearly north and south, the trend being about 10 degrees to the west of north.
This mineral belt passes over a low range of mountains about 1,000 feet above the water level of the country, constituting as perfect a gold formation as the earth produces. These large veins are cross sectioned by three and four feet veins having a trend of about 20 degrees east of north, occurring at intervals of about 1,000 feet.
The ore in these veins is exceptionally rich in free milling gold, not a single piece of the quartz but what will show a pay prospect in the pan for stamps and amalgamation.
The veins will hold their free milling properties until a permanent water level is encountered with depth. This point will not be encountered until 600 feet of depth and in all probability not until 1,000 feet of depth is attained. The veins are the most perfect true fissure, as will be comprehended by their description.
In drawing a comparison of this gold belt and the veins, with similar conditions in gold bearing section of California and Arizona, we find perfection and a lasting proposition written upon every feature of existing conditions. A man may traverse the earth and not find all the necessary conditions for successful free milling gold mining, as are presented in this gold belt. The geological and metallurgical conditions are perfect. Nature has also added all the necessary advantages. Plenty of soft water, timber in abundance and an accessible country; in fact so accessible that the writer made the trip of examination in a buggy where no wagon road had ever been constructed.
The War Eagle group is only one of many groups of veins located in this gold belt. In fact the gold belt has not been systematically prospected, although veins enough have already been located and opened sufficiently to show the value and character of the veins.
Arrangements are being made to immediately put a first-class mill on the War Eagle group of eight claims, and we predict that it will not be long before a dozen mills will be pounding out gold from these gold-bearing veins.
