Full Text

GERONA, August 7.
This place continues to defend itself with the utmost bravery, although the enemy have succeeded in making themselves masters of the Rebellin. The exertions of the garrison and the brave peasantry who have so nobly supported the honor of the Spanish arms, are incredible.
August 13.
The governor of Monjuich, perceiving the deplorable state in which that fortress was, and knowing that the enemy intended an immediate and vigorous attack, thinking it prudent no longer to expose a garrison which had defended itself with heroism, and crowned itself with glory, by sustaining so many attacks from the 25th of June, on which the enemy took several of the towers, and they having, on the 4th of July, made a practicable breach, and within these few days past demolished the whole of the curtain, determined to abandon the fortress, and at half past six of the afternoon of the 11th, after destroying every thing that might be useful to the enemy, and carrying the few provisions that remained, withdrew the garrison into this city, which it entered full of valor, and impatient for new glory. It must be confessed that this event is of some importance to the enemy; but because this fortress is taken, it does not follow that Gerona must be taken too; it has other fortresses, walls, and its garrison and inhabitants are resolved to dispute the streets inch by inch if the besiegers should ever enter them. If all the troops to which the nation has confided the defence of its rights and existence, had displayed the same constancy and patriotism with those of Gerona, its salvation would have been more prompt and complete.
