Full Text

A dispatch to the Detroit Tribune from Allegan says:

A joint discussion of the tariff question which took place this afternoon, with R. G. Horr for the Republicans, and Jerome W. Turner as champion for the Democrats, but it could hardly be called a discussion, as Mr. Turner did not attempt to answer any of the points made by Mr. Horr. Mr. Horr was the first speaker and talked for three quarters of an hour, making telling points for protection. Mr. Turner then spoke for an hour, but evidently had his speech all laid out beforehand, and did not allude to Mr. Horr's statements, but tried the old game of making the farmers think there was a combination between manufacturers and aristocrats to oppress them. He harped on this string all the way through. As soon as he had finished he left to catch a train. It was fortunate for his feelings that he did, for in the 15 minutes that were left Horr in which to close, he took Turner's speech and completely riddled it. Horr had his audience with him from first to last, and when it was over it was the universal opinion that Turner was most terribly used up.

In a joint tariff discussion in Allegan, Republican R. G. Horr spoke first for protection, then Democrat Jerome W. Turner spoke without addressing Horr's points, focusing on a supposed manufacturer-aristocrat conspiracy against farmers. Horr then rebutted Turner's speech effectively, winning the audience's approval.
