In connection with this subject we have received from a young friend the following:
AMBITIOUS APPEAL.
Good people of Wheeling, the Governor calls you,
He asks you politely to come out and train,
Lest while you are sleeping some evil befall you
Which time cannot ever repay you again.
Your brethren around you thought not of futurity,
Watched not a foe that was crafty and tricky,
So Government arms without any security
Have gone to replenish the rebels in Dixie.
And how would you feel, if in like situation,
When business cares through your minds are still humming,
To learn the good news, that without invitation,
One Mr. Jenkins to see you is coming.
Then merchants turn out from your trafficking houses,
Where dollars and dimes are the every day song,
Throw off your store clothes and put on the blouses;
Shoulder your muskets and march right along.
Ye brisk counter-hoppers, ye also are needed,
Your aid is required in repelling the hordes;
You have no excuse, for you haven't succeeded
In proving that pens were more mighty than swords.
Ye artisans also, whatever your trade is,
There yet is a calling which you should all know;
And if you would defend the 'dear creatures,' the ladies,
Why gird on your arms and prepare for the foe.
These are inducements the Governor offers,
And all must allow they're righteous and just;
But there yet is another which to you he proffers.
That whenever he wants you to muster, you must.
