Correspondence of the Advocate.

New Milford, Sept. 11, 1854.

Bro. Gorham--Thinking you wish to keep posted up in regard to the working of the liquor law, in all parts of the State, I thought I would give you a little history of what we have been doing in this town the past week. There have been three persons arrested here for drunkenness two were convicted and one discharged.

The first was Mr. Hiram Mead, who was noticed at some length in your paper of last week, and although he procured able council, in the person of one, Dr. Hull who labored hard for his client, yet he was fined $20 and costs, but failing to fork over the cash, he was committed, by Justice Fairchild for thirty days.

The next was Peter McFarland, who was arrested while intoxicated, in Southville, (in this town) by officer Treat, and detained until sober, and then refusing to disclose any thing in regard to the matter was brought before Justice Hine, who fined him $20 and costs, amounting to about $32, which he refused to pay, and was committed.

Philip Kelly was next arraigned but not finding proof sufficient, was discharged.

You may expect to hear something more from us soon, as it is expected that there are some engaged in selling here secretly, but we have our eyes on them and unless they are very careful, they are sure to be caught and if they are will get all they want of the law, they are trying to evade. You may expect to hear more next week.

Yours truly,
A Son of Temperance.
