Full Text

The youthful aspirant for coalition renown—he who has the temporary charge of the American—appears to be on the high road to the temple of Fame. For one of his years, he evinces wonderful precocity, and prates about matters and things with surprising facility. In an article on Thursday last, of about four-score lines, he has ingeniously contrived to stuff in about four-score misrepresentations, interlarded with an indiscriminate abuse of some of the brightest ornaments of this republic—men whose talents and patriotism have commanded the admiration and respect of their fellow citizens, throughout the land—men whom the people, by an immense majority, have thought worthy the most important trusts. And yet this stripling, scarce weaned from his toys and school-boy games, is placed in the editorial chair of the American, to tell the grey-headed readers of that print, of the incapacity of those whom the people have honored with their confidence. The art of calling hard names is easily acquired—but if some of the old grey beards, above referred to, would but put on their specs, and behold the youth, who thus labors in that vocation, it may well be imagined what queer looks and wry faces would be seen.
