Relations Between Cattle and Sheep-
men Seriously Strained—Corral-
Ing Water Rights.
From ranchmen in several portions of
the state it is learned that the most
strained relations are existing between
cattle and sheepmen. Especially is this
true in Converse Carbon counties. Dur-
ing the past week, near Saratoga, masked
cattlemen forcibly removed the sheep
from certain mountain ranges, and fear
is felt that open war will soon break
out.
In Converse county all the water is be-
ing taken up by homesteaders, who are,
in many cases, simply using the law to
segregate the water and thereby control
the public range. The reservoir act
passed by the last congress is being
taken advantage of all over the state to
control both land and water, at no ex-
pense to the monopolist except the land
office fees. Between illegal fencing, false
pretense homesteading and locating res-
ervoir sites upon which not a day's work
or a dollar is expended, the general wel-
fare of the bona fide stockman is being
greatly damaged.
