THE OUTRAGE AT NEWARK.

We published, as it was transmitted to us, the telegraphic account of a disgraceful riot which occurred in Newark, New Jersey, on the 5th instant. An examination has been had before a coroner's jury, the result of which is thus stated by the Newark Daily Advertiser:

"The last two witnesses sworn—one a teacher at the Wesleyan Institute and the other a young German—gave explicit testimony that the riot was commenced by an assault on the procession, while it was moving along peaceably, by a stone thrown from the crowd in Shipman street, and an attack upon the Henry Clay banner.

There was no evidence that stones or pistol shots came originally from the church. The testimony as to the death of McCarthy is exceedingly vague and unsatisfactory, and it still remains a mystery both as to whence came the fatal shot and who threw the first stone.

The Advertiser of Friday afternoon has a further notice:

"The late riot is still the subject of general conversation, though the warmth of excitement appears to have passed away. It is due to the Catholics, who were charged by the current rumors of the time with having made the first attack, to say that the testimony does not sustain the charge, and there is no legal evidence that they were at all implicated in the disturbance, while it was clearly shown that many of those who formed the procession were armed, and even discharged their weapons in the air, being apparently predisposed for a disturbance.

"It is due to our own city to state that the procession was composed almost entirely of foreigners and residents of other cities, who certainly seem to have manifested a spirit which Protestant christians will hardly feel willing to endorse."
