DIRECT NEGOTIATIONS FOR PEACE IN ETHIOPIAN WAR THROUGH LEAGUE AFFAIRS
European Countries Anxious To Attain Peace Then Take Other Problems
(By The Associated Press)
Undated, April 15. The League of Nations attempted through direct negotiations to determine the immediate prospect of peace between Italy and Ethiopia.
Salvador de Madariaga of Spain, president of the League's Committee of Thirteen, discussed the prospect with the Ethiopian envoy, while Italy's representative traveled from Rome.
The British sought to make a settlement of the Ethiopian conflict and advance a campaign for the establishment of a new European security system, while the French are equally determined to make a settlement of the Rhineland crisis with Germany, as number one on its list of things which must be done in Europe.
Diplomatic sources in Paris said that France had reached a point where she must choose between Italy and Great Britain as her best friend.
Notwithstanding, Italy continued to move ahead in Ethiopia, tightening her grip on the whole northern area, while planes spread terror in the interior.
