Bid To Anti-Red Crusade
NEW YORK - An American Legion invitation to participate in a national anti-Communist conference was rejected this week by the NAACP board of directors in a letter to National American Legion Commander George N. Craig.
While expressing the Association's opposition to Communism, Dr. Louis T. Wright, chairman of the NAACP board, asserted that the NAACP feels that "the effective way to combat Communism is to build an America that will be so meaningful for every citizen that Communist missionaries will find no converts willing to listen to an America without racial discrimination and segregation, with complete economic, political, and social equality for all."
Dr. Wright noted that among the organizations joining the Legion's anti-Communist crusade are several "who favor the segregation of Negro Americans in the armed services and in veterans' organizations others who bar Negro artists from their properties, others who oppose equality of opportunity in employment, still others who favor segregated schools, lily-white residential areas, and exclusion of Negro Americans from places of public accommodation

...modation." Dr. Wright stated that the NAACP "cannot collaborate with those who would maintain the inequalities of the color bar."
Following the conference held in New York, January 28-29, at which the NAACP was not represented, it was announced that a position on the continuations committee was being held open for the Association.
The board action rejects all collaboration in this movement.
