MURFREESBORO.

Meeting of the Synod of Nashville—Synopsis of the Proceedings.

Correspondence of the Union and American.

MURFREESBORO, Oct. 15, 1869.—The Synod of Nashville met in the Presbyterian Church at this place on Wednesday night, and was opened with a sermon by Rev. H. B. Barde, of Gallatin.

After the sermon the Synod was constituted with prayer, when Rev. James Park, of Knoxville, was elected Moderator: Rev. Joseph Martin, of the Knoxville Presbytery, temporary clerk, and H. H. McAllister, Clerk of the Presbytery of Nashville, assistant temporary clerk.

A large number of ministers and elders were present, and one of the most delightful meetings of the Synod we have had for years began among the good people of Murfreesboro. It would be invidious to make distinction in reference to men; they are a band of earnest, hard working men, and the Church of God in their hands is making steady progress.

After the appointment of the standing committees the Synod adjourned until next morning.

The items of interest the next day were the addresses of Rev. J. R. Wilson, D. D., Secretary of Sustentation, in behalf of his work, and Rev. Wm. Plummer, D. D., in behalf of the Theological Seminary at Columbia. These two men are the venerable Trojans of this church, and their addresses were deeply impressive and highly instructive.

The discussion in reference to Stewart College, at Clarksville, was protracted, animated and instructive. The reports show that the buildings and grounds have been fully repaired, and exercises are now held in the college with about seventy students in attendance. These repairs have been made at a cost of about four thousand dollars, and if the churches now forward the balance of their apportionments the apparatus and furniture of the college may be put in place. Three Professors are now in the chairs, and the prospects of the college are very flattering. The college is now repaired and out of debt.

This discussion closed the business of Thursday.

At night Drs. Wilson and Plummer again addressed the Synod and a large congregation of citizens, on the subjects of Foreign Missions and Education of the Ministry.

Rev. John W. Neil, the pastor of the church and his people have shown themselves equal to the call upon them, and the Synod is delighted with their visit here.
