Portsmouth New-Hampshire GAZETTE.
TO THE PUBLIC.
Who knows but he, whose hand the lightning forms,
Who heaves old ocean, and who wings the storms;
Pours fierce ambition in a Caesar's mind,
And turns young Ammon loose to scourge mankind.
Who knows but he, who for the world's offence
Sends wars, famine and fatal pestilence;
Inspires dark deceit in a traitor's breast,
And forms a tory for his country's weal;
Instills fell hatred in his harden'd heart,
And thus inures him to the blackest art;
Or permits the malignant prince of hell,
To raise to power a bold infidel?
Satan's malice can sure no further go,
Since to make a third he joins the other two.
While thus a tory, infidel and traitor:
Are the odious burden of my song,
And the horrid subject of my metre;
Attend ye impious and faithless throng,
And ye pious and faithful saints rehearse
The solemn truths contained in my verse:
Let the angels above the notes resound,
And the fiends below tremble at the sound!
And now ye sacred nine with skill divine,
Aid my design and breathe in every line:
Let truth and justice thro' the whole prevail,
That honest men may smile while villains rail.
Those justly doom'd to wear a lasting brand,
They who run, may both read and understand.
God's ways to man be ever justified,
And his great name ador'd:
The ways of man to man let be decried,
And his vile arts abhor'd.
To be continued at the writer's leisure,
And to be perus'd at the reader's pleasure.
Et opem sapientia sua divinam, ac Numinis ipsius
numen caeleste, tribuens, dem mihi Deus,
Finis in presenti.
