Mary W. Hudson.
[Special Correspondence.]
OMAHA, May 8.—The author of "Esther the Gentile," the recently published novel dealing with polygamous life in Utah, which has been attracting some attention, was born in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, June 10, 1840. Mrs. Hudson's parents, Edward K. and Sarah T. Smith, and all of her ancestors belonged to the Society of Friends. They have been noted for the active support which they have given to every moral reform which has been advocated in their time and for the positive qualities of character displayed at all times.
Mrs. Mary Hudson is the wife of Maj. J. K. Hudson, the editor and proprietor of The Topeka (Kan.) Capital and a conspicuous figure in the history of Kansas. She was married at Wyandotte, Kan., April 5, 1863, and accompanied her husband, who was then attached to the Army of the Frontier, to Rolla, Mo., where for some time she shared with him the fortunes of war.
Her literary efforts in the past have all been in the interest of the several successful journals which her husband has owned and edited, her short stories and popular sketches for The Capital having made her familiar to Kansas readers.
Mrs. Hudson has two daughters and a son now living, one daughter having died in infancy.
MRS. MARY W. HUDSON.
