SEATTLE (AP) - Otto A. Nelson of Chitina, Alaska, stopped in at the main office of the National Bank of Commerce Friday to leave a poke of gold dust, first such deposit there in more than 15 years.
The occurrence was so unusual that a gold scale could not be found immediately to make an exact measure of the deposit. The gold weighed about 26 1/2 pounds.
Nelson, former postmaster in Chitina, operates a general store there. The community is in the heart of the old Alaska gold fields. He said he had collected the gold during several years.
The dust will be sent to the United States Mint Assay office in San Francisco, where it will be refined and its exact value determined.
In its unrefined state the dust now contains about 10 to 35 per cent silver. Pure gold is worth $35 an ounce.
