Philadelphia, May 2.

The following are extracts of letters which we have received from our correspondent at St. Thomas's. They give the news at that Island as it was received day after day, until the 9th of April.

Dem. Press.

St. Thomas, April 1.

Arrived, a schooner from Cumana, and brings news, that the Independent general Marino attacked Carupano (to windward of Cumana) with his army, but was defeated with the loss of several hundred men ; it is said his private baggage fell into the hands of the Royalists, and his hat, and uniform &c. were brought by said vessel to this port and are now on board.

April 4.

Arrived a schooner from Puerto Cavello, with a paper signed "Noticia sin exageratione," (notice without exaggeration) stating that gen. Morillo, on the 18th March, near Villa de Cura (two days march from the city of Caracas) attacked with 4000 regulars, the Independents under Bolivar--about 4,500 men, infantry, and 1,500 cavalry. and totally defeated them, and took 7000 head of cattle, Bolivar's secretary, &c. and states it has by some said that Bolivar is wounded, and others, that he is killed.

April 6.

Arrived, a schooner from Laguira, the captain of which informs, that on the 18th March, a battle was fought near Villa de Cura; in which Bolivar was defeated with the loss of 500 men--his papers, baggage, &c. confirms the account that gen. Marino was defeated at the attack he made with his detachment, consisting of about 600 men, on Carupano.

I leave it you to believe of the foregoing as much as you may think proper, I have conversed with many people here about the Independents of Venezuela. and am strengthened in my opinion, that the Spaniards will lose these beautiful provinces, and that the colored people will finally get possession of them and their government.

April 7.

It is confidently reported here that Admiral Brion is arrested by Bolivar, and will probably lose his head. A great many adventurers from Europe, such as formerly fought in the Peninsula for the re-establishment of Ferdinand, &c. and the deliverance of France from Bonaparte, have joined Bolivar to assist him to deliver Venezuela from Ferdinand-- (thus the world goes )

April 9.

This morning arrived a schooner from Laguira with the official account of the affair with the Royalists at Villa de Cura --the Independents are stated to have been 1500 cavalry and 200 infantry; that they lost 400 men in dead and wounded, besides a number of prisoners coming in momentarily. Morillo says in the official account in a Gazette of Caracas, under date of the 27th ult. that several of his officers are wounded, and an English colonel Donnell killed. From Porto Bello
the last accounts state that the Independents in the South Seas have landed within the territories of Panama, and have done great damage to the Royalists.

P. S. An American frigate it is said has been seen off the south side of St. Domingo.
