End of a Romance.
The Heroine of the Baker-Dean Coachman Runaway Match.

Last Thursday night a white woman in Washington City, named Annie Dean, was murdered in a most wretched and filthy apartment of a shanty in an obscure alley. Members of the police force, who have long known her as an inmate of low houses there, assert that she is the daughter of a rich New York millionaire, who married her father's coachman in that city some years since. This story is also declared to be true by late associates. The room in which she was found is about twelve feet square, and is detached from the main building, surrounded by an inclosure of palings, with entrance door in the rear and one window. A more dismal and filthy place it would be difficult to imagine. A double bed occupies about one-fourth of the space of the room, and a table and other articles are standing around promiscuously, and several empty whiskey bottles were on the floor and under the bed, while filthy clothing and rags were lying about the room. The walls and ceiling were covered over with pictorial newspapers, and every part was dark from dirt and smoke. The deceased was lying on a pile of rags on the floor at the foot of the bed, with scarcely clothing enough to cover her, her arms extended and hands clenched as if by convulsions. Her face was covered with purple spots, eyes partially open, hair disheveled, mouth half open and a multitude of flies collected on her person. She had been murdered by a colored woman beating her over the head with a bottle of whiskey, and left in the above condition till found by the police. At the inquest one of her associates testified that Annie, after living with her awhile, went to Baltimore to live with the Sisters, but came back again. Annie told her that she married her father's coachman in New York, and ran away from home. She lived at Willard's when she first came here, and her husband left her. Her father's family were very rich, and they all turned against her, and her brother was going to shoot her husband and ran him off. Altogether the case is one of the most revolting ever brought to light in Washington.
