By a Vessel arrived at Marblehead in 7 Weeks from Lisbon, we learn, that the Affairs in Portugal are not so favourable as we could wish: The Spaniards 'tis said are joined by a Number of French Troops, and collected their Forces from Torre Moncavo, Braganza, Miranda, and Ciudad Rodrigo, carrying off all the Carts and Oxen fit for Service; and from the last mentioned Place all the Artillery belonging to it, and had laid a formal Siege to Almeida, a regular fortified Town of Portugal, in the Province of Beira, with a Castle on the River Coa: This City 'tis said contains between 21 and 22,000 Inhabitants, besides the Garrison, who had taken all necessary Steps towards a vigorous defence, and were in Hopes to disconcert the Schemes of the Enemy: That several Detachments had been Sent out from the Spanish camp, who had committed unheard of barbarities among the small Villages near Almeida, robbing and plundering the Inhabitants, setting Fire to their crops, and killing several of the Peasants in cold blood.
