THE WASHINGTON DUEL.
The Tories having made use of the duel between Graves and Cilley to effect political purposes, and to turn it into a party affair, we are bound to offer such authentic statements in relation to it as may serve to disabuse the public mind. The base hypocrisy of the Tory leaders in the course pursued in this business was never equalled; neither could their falsehoods and misrepresentations be equalled. It now conclusively appears that Cilley was sacrificed by his friends who were moved by their confidence in his skill to urge the death of Graves. We say that Cilley was sacrificed by his friends, who would willingly sacrifice one man or twenty to save any election. They have barely saved New-Hampshire for one short year; but the influence of this business will recoil with ten fold force upon their own heads.
The letter and statement of Mr. Wise, Graves second, to his constituents we publish in the preceding columns. The facts there given will serve to expose the proceedings of the parties; the responsibility of individuals is yet to be made apparent, beyond what is here manifest. The sequel will prove what we here allege, that Mr. Cilley's skill in the use of the rifle, a weapon of his own choice, gave his friends full confidence in his success, and in seeking the death of Graves they sacrificed Cilley.
