LONDON, August 13. We learn by an authentic letter lately received from the East-Indies, That the brave Col. Clive, and his Lady, went up into the country to pay a visit to the Nabob, whom the Colonel had advanced to that great and rich dignity, on the death of that cruel Frenchified Nabob, who destroyed so many of our People in the Black Hole at Calcutta. -- On their entrance they found the Nabob very splendidly dressed, his garment, collar, and turbant, being almost cover'd with diamonds of inestimable value, and seated on a magnificent throne, enrich'd with precious stones. He received them with the greatest civility and friendship and after the ceremony, taking particular notice of a beautiful sprig of diamonds that were exquisitely set in the best modern European taste, which the Colonel's Lady wore in her hair, she immediately took it from her head, and stuck it in his turbant : which polite Action he was so pleased with, that, in return, he presented her with as many diamonds as are said to be worth 10,000 l. sterling : A rare Example of great gratitude, and additional generosity to the Colonel, to whom he was indebted for those extensive and rich regions he now possesseth.

The same letter adds, that the Colonel intends to stay a year longer in India, to try to recover the decaying state of our settlements and trade in those parts, which 'tis apprehended would have been laid waste, but for the great action he has done in support of them. Had some of our C--s who behaved ill under Admiral Pocock, against the French fleet, been indued with the honest and brave Principles of this modern Alexander, who acknowledgeth himself possess'd of 500,000 l. they would have had more regard for their characters, and the honour of their country, than for the riches they had gained by plunder at Calcutta.

We hear Adm. Pocock is on his Passage to England. Commodore Stevens having joined them, with his Squadron, all well.
