THE SKYSCRAPER CHURCH

In a good many American cities and in more than one Christian denomination the idea seems to be developing that a church building should not be simply and merely a temple of worship, but should be rather a completely equipped institution for the promotion of all manner of practical benevolences and for the forwarding of all kinds of effort which aim at human uplift and moral progress.

This practical utilization of church plants is taking form in many ways, and in some instances it is getting church organizations more or less into business.

The Travis Park Methodist congregation of San Antonio, Tex., for instance, is contemplating building a skyscraper church of twelve stories above ground, with a deep basement. The big basement will be used by the church society for various practical purposes. On the first floor above ground will be the church auditorium, seating 3500 persons; on the second floor will be Sunday-school rooms, a library, social-rooms, play-rooms, a restaurant with kitchen attached, bath rooms and a swimming pool, a gymnasium and a day nursery. The second story of the church it will be observed, is to subserve many useful purposes. The ten upper stories will be cut up into offices and rented.

The idea of a skyscraper church seems to have originated in Cleveland, but if it has been realized there not much noise has been made about it. The turning of a church plant to practical uses is an idea which has been more or less extensively put to realization. The idea involved in this utilization trend is that religion should be active and not passive merely in its manifestations.—Baltimore American
