Experts on tobacco and other supplies furnished to the sailors of the ship Hawaiian Isles were called as witnesses before United States Judge Dole this morning. In the suit of Soderman for wages.
The ship has charged Soderman with certain supplies which he secured on the voyage and his attorney is seeking to show that there were overcharges.
A. Wirtz, head of the liquor and tobacco department of Hackfeld and Company, was called as an expert to testify regarding a plug of the tobacco supplied to Soderman from the slop chest.
He said it was fairly good tobacco, fit for either chewing or smoking.
Davis invited him to take a chew, Wirtz having stated that he sometimes chewed, but the invitation was not accepted. A cut was made in the plug and after examining it Wirtz said the tobacco was good.
Similar inquiries were made as to the quality and value of other supplies furnished to the sailors.
