FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.

LAZARETTO, August 18.

Just visited brig Growler, Robinson, of Philadelphia, 31 days from Cadiz.

There are on board, a few late Cadiz papers; they contain nothing worth extracting--

Mr. --, a respectable American passenger, who has resided a considerable time in Spain, politely furnishes the following information:

The strong fortress of Lerida in Catalonia, surrendered to the French, by treachery on the part of the Spanish commander.

The garrison contained 5000 men, and was provided with provisions for one year. The commander was immediately made governor of Valencia by the French.

It was daily expected that Tarragona would be besieged.

The expedition of the combined Spanish and British forces from Cadiz and Gibraltar, under command of the English general Bowes, and the Spanish general Lacy, for the relief of Malaga, failed in its object.

The English troops returned to Gibraltar, and the Spanish army remained at Ronda.

June 8th great apprehension was entertained in Sicily of an invasion from the French; who had collected an army of 50,000 men on the coast of Calabria where they had many transport boats.

The garrison of Hostalrich, a strong castle on the main road from Barcelona to France, escaped the besiegers, after holding out five months and made good their retreat, with the loss of only 50 men.

Sir Charles Cotton had been appointed commander of the English naval squadron in the Mediterranean.

Ad. Boyle was appointed to the command at Malta.

Between 30 and 40 sail of American vessels under confiscation at Naples; many of which they were fitting out for privateers.

A peace had been concluded between the Portuguese and Algerines.
