THE QUESTION SETTLED.
NORTH CAROLINA HAS GONE FOR VAN BUREN!
We have received the New York Evening Post of yesterday, which affords the gratifying intelligence that North Carolina has given a majority for the Democratic candidate. The Post copies from the Journal of Commerce, which gives the following account.
NORTH CAROLINA.—Probable majority for Mr. Van Buren 2500. We have returns from 42 Counties, showing a Van Buren gain of 5,790. Van Buren majority is 3,455.
GEORGIA.—Reports from 45 counties in that state show such a whig gain, that we must give it up. The Journal of Commerce gives 47 counties,' with a whig majority of 2934.
The Commercial Advertiser of yesterday, a leading Whig paper, says 'the die is cast,' and gives up the battle. We make the following extracts.
THE DIE IS CAST.
The mails have brought a sufficient number of returns from North Carolina, to enable us to announce that she has relapsed into Jackson Van Burenism. This result settles the question of Mr. Van Buren's election, beyond a doubt. The electors chosen, as far as positive results have been ascertained, stand as follows:—78 for Harrison, and 139 for Van Buren; States to be heard from considered as certain will give him 7 more. 'This is a result which we have long foreseen that we should, sooner or later, be compelled to announce.
