Institute Scheduled For Spelman Faculty
Prior to the opening of Spelman College Wednesday, Sept. 13, the members of the faculty and staff will participate in an institute. Dr. Arthur Combs, a nationally known clinical psychologist and professor of education at the University of Florida, will deliver three lectures for the benefit of the faculty and staff.
Using as his general theme "Improving Faculty-Student Relationships," Dr. Combs will speak on Monday, Sept. 11, 1961, on the subject "New Understandings of the Learning Process." On Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1961, he will speak on the subjects "What Man Can Become" and "The Myths that Bind Us."
The meeting on Monday. President and Mrs. Manley will entertain members of the faculty and staff at which time old and new faculty and staff will have the opportunity to meet and greet each other.
Among the faculty will be four members who will resume their departmental duties after leaves of absence to do further study: Mrs. Shirley McBay will return to the department of mathematics after two years of study at the University of Chicago toward the doctoral degree; returning to the position of College Minister, after receiving a Master of Arts degree in Religion, will be Reverend Norman Bates who studied during 1960-61 at Yale University Divinity School on a Danforth Foundation Fellowship; Mrs. Esta Seaton, a 1960-61 recipient of a grant from the Southern Fellowship Fund to work on her doctoral dissertation, will again be teaching in the department of English; resuming his duties in the department of history and social science will be Dr. Howard Zinn who during the academic year 1960-61 was a Fellow in East Asian Studies at Harvard University. Dr. Zinn will also direct the program in non-Western Studies for the Center during the 1961-62 academic year.

Smith, professor of biology at Spelman College, who during the academic year 1960-61 received his fifth research grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, on July 25, 1961, received a notification of the sixth renewal research grant of $4,197. The abbreviated title of the research project at Spelman is a study of nutritional requirements of additional Trichomonas Vaginalis. Three publications have resulted from the research conducted by Dr. Smith and his graduate students during the past five years.
