Full Text
Air—"She stood beside the Altar."
He comes before the people with
pure unsullied name,
And not a single foe can bring
charge to dim his fame.
He's stood within the council hall
And in the sage's seat,
And never for his country's good,
His heart has ceased to beat.
His hopes are centered in her cause,
Her glory is his aim;
The nation whom he served so well,
Hails him with loud acclaim,
And proudly 'neath his banners form,
In long and bright array,
Content to know that freedom's safe,
Beneath his honest sway.
Old Jackson our devoted chief.
Beholds with thoughts of pride,
The people gathering for the friend
Who battled at his side,
When in those stormy days in which
The whigs their powers employed,
To crush the brave and dauntless man
Who their foul bank destroyed.
But triumph hovered on his crest,
Success adorned his brow;
As great a triumph yet awaits
The people's champion now,
For though they slumbered for awhile,
They now have fully woke,
And all with patriot zeal come forth
For Dallas and for Polk,
From the Indiana State Sentinel.
He comes before the people with
