Senator Carter says he will support Teller if nominated at Chicago but will not support a silver Democrat.
The news from Chicago indicates that R. P. Bland is in the lead for the nomination and will probably win the empty honor. Teller is not in it. The majority of the Montana delegates are for Bland.
A few days ago the Argus said the Republican party was the true friend of silver. Since the St. Louis convention declared for gold and McKinley the Argus has undoubtedly changed its mind.-Democrat.
Time will prove that the Republican party is the true friend of silver. The Democracy is now posing as the same old wolf in sheep's clothing. It is playing for the offices and the spoils. It was in full power in the government for two years- in control of all legislative departments and what did it do for silver? About the first thing was to repeal the clause of the Sherman act which called for the purchase of four million and five hundred thousand ounces of the white metal monthly. There is no assurance that it would do any different if again placed in power and the man who would trust it has more than an orthodox faith.
McKinley buttons are scarce in Butte. Whenever a man is seen wearing one the crowd cries "b-a-a, b-a-a," and the button disappears. Democrat.
Our esteemed contemporary undoubtedly thinks the above cute or he would not have given it place in his columns. Yet here is a paper published in the midst of the largest woolgrowing county in the state and its own existence largely due to the money distributed by this industry, enjoying the slurs of the tough element of Butte, as an honest, laboring man concedes the right of any man to his sentiments it matters not how expressed. Time was when the money of a woolgrower saved our local Democratic organ from the sheriff's hands, and its future welfare depends on a fair measure of protection to the wool industry which it will get with the election of Wm. McKinley. With our industries in a prosperous condition Lewistown will double in population in the next five years. If we can't get all we want we believe in taking the very best we can get, and that is where we propose to stand. There is nothing to gain from the Democracy, absolutely nothing, either for wool or silver, and time will demonstrate it.
Butte Tribune: The Democratic party undoubtedly thinks that since the discovery of the X rays it is all right to count their chickens before they are hatched. The best of it is that the Democratic free silver chicken will, if ever hatched, pretty soon go home to roost. A Democratic free silver chicken is a mongrel production-ever hungry after office, and easily charmed by the voice of the cuckoo. "It do make us smile, it do," to read the predictions of the Democratic party concerning that free silver plank that will be framed at the Chicago convention. All Democrats today are prophets and sons of prophets, and their prophesies are almost unanimous that the Democratic party will declare for free silver. What boots it if they do? Will the voters believe them? Not much. The American people are long suffering, but they have suffered too long from a party that has made for itself a record of breaking promises. How about that free silver bill that was to immediately follow the repeal of the Sherman bill? Let the Democrats figure away to their heart's content, but deep down in the hearts of the American people is placed the conviction that when a party has been in full power and has had every opportunity to do the right thing by silver, and has not only refused to do this, but has viciously opposed any free silver legislation, that party is not to be relied upon any more.
