The following is given as an exact return of forces now employed, respectively by the Turks, the Austrians, and the Russians. They are in all computed at more than 900,000 combatants.
The regular infantry of the Turks, encamped at present, or in the different garrisons, amounts to 132,000 men, of whom 110,000 are Janissaries, 10,000 Topes, or Artillerists, 60,000 Bashaws' guards, and 6,000 sappers and miners.
The Sipahis paid out of the public exchequer are to the number of 12,000. They reckon 132,000 Timariots, 13,000 heavy cavalry, 40,000 Sejbans, in all 202,000 horsemen.
If to these we add the soldiery of Cairo, the volunteers, and the Tartars, who consist of a body of at least 100,000, we shall find that the whole number of the Turkish troops is 434,000 men.
The Austrians have on the frontiers 275,000 men, of whom at least 245,000 are in the field, without reckoning the regiments that are on the march to join their armies.
The number of Russian troops employed in the present war, cannot be reckoned at less than 200,000; so that in the seat of war, we shall find not much less than a million of fighting men.
