By BILL BROWER For ANP
Last season when the Cincinnati Reds acquired Don Newcombe from the Los Angeles Dodgers for first baseman Steve Bilko and pitcher Johnny Klippstein, it could hardly be said-at the time-which team got the best of the bargain.
But there is no doubt now which one did. Both Klippstein and Bilko are back in the minors. But Newcombe--his performance on the mound this season-is one of baseball's biggest comeback stories.
The giant righthander is the ace of the Reds' pitching staff and undoubtedly his work has kept the team from dropping into the National league basement.
Truth to tell, Newk deserved a spot on the NL all-star team. When regular competition halted for the all-star recess, Newk had won nine games and lost four, after a disappointing start that saw him lose three out of his first four decisions.
But since he has won eight straight, completed eight out of his last nine starts and reduced his earned run average to 3.05. For the season, Don has hurled 10 complete games in his 14 starts.
GOOD PINCH HITTER
Newcombe has exercised complete mastery over the San Francisco Giants, trimming Willie Mays and company four straight times. He has also vanquished his old teammates, the Dodgers, twice.
The 33-year-old New Jerseyan also has been quite valuable for Cincinnati as a pinch hitter. He was batting around the .350 mark and had driven in 20 runs.
Until this season, he had a lifetime major league batting mark of .270 with 12 homers and 85 runs batted in. Last season he led the major league pitchers in batting with a .361 mark and hit .353 as a pinch hitter for the Reds (6 for 17). In 1955, when he batted .359 to lead the NL pitchers in hitting, he set another record for pitchers by clouting seven home runs.
Three times in his major league career, Newcombe has won 20 or more games. He posted a record of 20 and 11 in 1951; 20 and 5 in 1955 and 27 and 7 in 1956. Until this season, he had a major career total of 130 victories against 73 defeats.
