Local house wives are reminded this week that the federal 10-cent a pound tax on yellow margarine will be removed as of July 1st.
This means a substantial saving to the consumer, resulting from removal of federal taxes and license fees on yellow margarine.
The federal laws imposing 10-cents a pound tax on yellow margarine, 14-cent a pound tax on white margarine and the manufacturers', wholesalers' and retailers' license fees all were removed by Congress in March.
These savings will accrue to the benefit of the consumer.
The revised federal law provides complete protection against possible fraud. Every carton of yellow margarine must be so labeled, both on the outside and on all inner wraps. If served in a restaurant, yellow margarine must be molded in triangular patties or, if served in squares, must be clearly identified on each patty. In addition, a sign must be displayed stating that yellow margarine is served or a similar statement must be imprinted on each menu.
Removal of the federal laws was the climax of a 50-year battle for equal rights for margarine, although the fight continues in 15 states which still forbid sale of yellow margarine.
