The Editor, pro tempore, of this paper, having, in the ordinary course of his profession, experienced a most extraordinary and novel assault, in a persecution commenced against opinion, by one who thought proper to construe to his own prejudice certain paragraphs which appeared at different times in this Gazette, thinks it proper to declare to the public, that although he is determined to hold no measure with an open enemy, yet, as his views have ever been directed to the propagation of such truths as may be useful to us in our political or social state, he offers himself as the impartial organ through which the sentiments of the opposite parties may be communicated to, the public. As a thorough knowledge of the nature and treatment of the present malady, is of the highest importance to the welfare and happiness of this country, he invites the communications of those professional and literary gentlemen, whose experience and knowledge may throw light on this interesting subject. On a point of such general discussion, and on which he, like many others, can say but too much from fatal experience, it is to be expected that every one will have formed some opinion—yet, as that opinion may be founded on partial facts, or partial representations, he is willing to renounce his own in favor of those evidence of his persecutor, when the latter shall have acquired the sanction of experience and general concurrence.
But as a question of a much higher nature, than the good or ill will of a weak, petulant individual, is implicated in the process instituted against the editor, he feels himself bound in duty and honor, as a member of this free community, to adhere to his wonted line of conduct, and to give to the world the sentiments of his correspondents, without stipulating for the language in which they are to be clothed. He ever has been and will be careful not to touch persons, and as for opinions he cannot but think that, maugre all that Sangrado can say or do, they must and will shift for themselves.
