Duvernay will not play at the National next season. Celeste will. Lecompte, it is said, has a law suit with Simpson. We hope not. Will any one give us some information on the subject?
The Arabs have been a very good card for the summer season at the Park. The receipts of that house each night these people have played, have averaged over $500.
Morley is the best English (or any other) bass singer now in the country. Mrs. Morley is without a rival in her own peculiar style of singing. Her "Rory O'More," and "Banks of the Blue Moselle," are inimitable.
The Liverpool steam ship leaves Liverpool tomorrow, the 21st. She will reach this port the 4th of September.
Power, Vestris, the Keeleys, Ellen Tree, Forrest, and Lecompte, (if she recovers,) are, we learn, the only stars that will appear at the Park this season.
There is no truth in the assertion that the officers of the schooner Merchant refused assistance to the sufferers of the Pulaski. 'Cause why? They never saw the Pulaski.
When it was currently reported throughout the country, that Capt. Marryatt gave what was called "the infamous toast," at Toronto, relative to Capt. Drew, and the burning of the Caroline, the "Boston Atlas" came out and said, that, "at the time Capt. Marryatt was said to be in Toronto giving that toast, he was quietly eating a family dinner in Boston."— Capt. Marryatt has himself given the lie to this in the recent flourish of trumpets, &c., at Cincinnati. It, therefore, behooves the "Boston Atlas" to come out and say from what source the falsehood emanated.
Pitch or Asphaltum is about to become an important article of commerce. It has been used for fuel, and for paving of streets.
We understand, from a good theatrical gossip, that the facts of the affair about Madame Vestris and her servants at Saratoga, are these : Vestris and her Charley could not condescend to sit at the public table: they had their meals in a private room, and sent their servants to dine at the table d'hote with generals, admirals, governors, secretaries of state, id est genus omnes! And "that's the way the row began."
Sir Frederick Adam or Sir Benjamin D'Urban, will succeed Sir John Colborne as commander of the forces in Canada when he retires.
H. M. S. Inconstant takes Sir Charles Paget admiral of the station to Bermuda, and proceeds, thence to England.
The comet of Encke is expected to be visible this autumn.
Niblo, engage Norton.
There has been a tremendous storm in Lexington, Ky.
The milk sickness is raging fearfully at Louisville. Let every one be careful and not drink milk from cows fed on the swill of distilleries.
Ald. De Forest do you sell your swill to cow-keepers?
"Inquisiter" is informed that no definite engagement has yet been entered into either by Stephen Price, or James Wallack, in relation to Charles Kean. That gentleman, however, has some slight idea of visiting us this season.
Madame Vestris and her travelling companion, Charles Mathews, and Power, are engaged to play only 146 nights the next season.
"A Gothamite" is received, and shall be attended to.
"J. E." in answer to "Eliza" is received and shall have an early insertion; but we still anxiously look for an answer from a lady.
"An old Subscriber" is under consideration.
The thermometer at 85 yesterday.
Onderdonk & Carpenter's tobacco factory, at Tarrytown, has been destroyed by fire.
It is said that a brother to a well known actress, married not many years since, could tell something about Simpson's wine if he chose!
The French frigate is worth seeing. She lays off the Battery. The officers are polite and attentive to all the visitors. But she cannot begin to compare with old Ironsides. The hull of the corvette is the handsomer of the two.
The loss of lives and property all over the country, by lightning, almost surpasses belief.
