Our social circles were considerably shocked, recently, over the clandestine marriage of a young lady in high life, to nearly an utter stranger. The lady became acquainted with her suitor while travelling during the summer, and he immediately sought her hand. The father, however, desired the young gentleman to show some credentials as to character before he would consent to the marriage. This the young man failed to do, but it is believed secretly met the lady at various times, and finally persuaded her to elope with him. The lady left home with the avowed intention of making some purchases on Main street, and nothing was again heard of her until evening, when a boy appeared at her parents' residence with an envelope. This when opened was found to contain a marriage certificate, the marriage having been performed some hours previous. The happy pair are supposed to have left for New York.
