Late Yesterday Afternoon, the Harriot Snow Packet Boat, Capt. Bonnel, arrived here with the August Mail from Falmouth, which he left the 15th of that Month; but have little Room and less Time, can give only an Extract of two out of the Prints brought by her. viz.
That the Battle said to have happened between Prince Ferdinand and the French, was not general, the Attack having been made on the Marquis of Granby, on the 16th of July, at Fellinghausen, who bravely defended himself for a considerable Time, till reinforced, when he obliged the Enemy to retreat, and both M. Broglio and Pr. Soubise, had separated, the former retiring towards Paderborn, and the latter towards Minden, and passed the Roer; and that both armies were in great distress for want of provisions: Thus the two formidable armies have been baffled in their project, which was to beat the allied army, and conquer Hanover; then they would have talk'd of exchanges and restitutions.
That nothing of importance had happened on the side of the Prussians, Austrians or Russians, except skirmishes.--That the principal town in the Island of Goree was reduced to ashes the 14th of March, save three houses only.
Cologn, July 21. On the 16th at break of Day, M. Broglio renewed the attack with fresh troops, and employed no less than 20,000 men; but the allies maintained their ground with a steadiness beyond example.--The army of Soubise were far from being idle: on the contrary, they attacked the right of the allied army, under the hereditary Prince, Duke Ferdinand retiring towards Ham, to avoid being surrounded, and to restore his communication with the Marquis of Granby. At length, about even in the evening, M. Broglio's corps being quite in disorder, and M. Soubise being able to make no impression, a retreat became necessary, as they had above 6000 wounded, most of whom they were fortunate enough to carry off. Both the French armies fell back to the Roer, and as it is impossible for them to subsist, M. Broglio will be obliged to retire to the Main and Cassel, and Prince de Soubise to the Lower Rhine.- Thus they have contrived to begin and end their campaign at once.
On the 27th of July the whole Army decamped, part of which went in pursuit of M. Broglio's, and the other in pursuit of Soubise's forces, having plenty of Provisions.
About 10 days before the packet sailed, a fleet of near 80 transports left Spithead, under convoy of the Alcide, and four other men of war, bound for this place, with a number of forces on board, some say, five regiments: That according to the papers they were to join the army under General Amherst, and in conjunction with Com. Douglas's squadron, and the troops from Guadaloupe, were to make an attempt upon Martinico. But notwithstanding all this, and the hot press in England for men, 'tis thought and partly assured by letters from home, that the next packet will bring a certain account of PEACE; "as (say these letters) the last stroke given by Prince Ferdinand, has put an end to the campaign for this season, and the consequence must be- a PEACE."
Tuesday last arrived the sloop Sally, Michael Morton master, of this port, from the coast of Africa. On the 1st inst. in lat. 28. 24 N. lon. 38. 27 W. he was taken by a French privateer sloop of 10 guns, and 110 men, and after taking out all the slaves (128 in number) they permitted them to proceed in her. The privateer had before taken four other vessels.
On Monday arrived the brig Friendship, Captain Ward, in 18 Days from Tortola. A report was current there, that the men on board one of his majesty's frigates of 36 guns, had killed the officers (except the mate and boatswain) and turned pirates; and that they had taken a Rhode Island vessel, which they released after taking out what Things they had a mind for; but all this was only hearsay report without any other particular.
