Poinciana Boy, Polio Patient, Cheered By Gifts, Letter From New York Giants
A Poinciana boy, Edwin Enser, 10, recovering from polio at Jackson Memorial hospital, Miami, was made happy today when Police Chief Louis M. J. Eisner, on behalf of the Police Athletic League, presented him with an official Spalding big league baseball autographed by every member of the New York Giants baseball club.
Among the autographs on the baseball are those of Mickey Witek, Mike Budnick, Bill Voiselle, Gene Thompson, Dick Bartell, Jack Graham, Ernie Lombardi, Hal Schumaker, Johnny Rucker, Nate Andrews, John Mize.
Besides the autographed ball, young Enser was also given a baseball book autographed by team members and, as a special surprise, an official Giant baseball cap in the club's colors and initials.
These gifts were made possible by Chief Eisner, founder of the PAL. Accompanying them was a letter, addressed to the chief, and signed by Edward T. Brannick, secretary of the Giants baseball club.
Young Enser was stricken with polio June 8. He is a member of the PAL junior boys team.
More than the confinement in the hospital, Edwin missed playing with the baseball team. In an effort to cheer him up, Chief Eisner and other members of the PAL conceived the idea of asking the Giants club for the autographed ball.
Marcel Mazeau is president of the PAL and Robert Pollock is secretary. Two baseball teams, junior boys and girls, are coached by S. Odom and will resume play as soon as county health authorities permit. Other events planned include a track field day, a hobby show, and a swimming meet.
