Full Text

May 20. A letter from Paris, May 11, says, Comtesse de la Motte, no longer able to hold out against the convincing proofs that evidently establish her criminality, has at length confessed herself the main spring in the affair of the necklace. It is a fact no less praiseworthy than singular, that the Cardinal is at this very moment as indefatigably employed in soliciting the indulgence of the Sovereign for this unhappy woman; as he was busy a few weeks back in endeavouring to obtain the same favour for himself. His Eminence is resolved to pay for the necklace, in hopes that the whole of his generous proceedings will totally obliterate every idea concerning the disagreeable business. The Cardinal's conduct is truly laudable: but how could he be thought to wish for the death of a woman whom he once tenderly loved, and for whom, perhaps, at this instant, he entertains a particle of affection?
