Full Text
We hope our Ohio County readers will not forget, in the interest of other questions at issue in the approaching election, that a pressure is certain to be brought to bear in the convention by great corporations for exemptions and privileges which they cannot claim under the present constitution. For example, the constitution now requires that every kind of property shall be taxed uniformly with every other. Railroad Companies claim that on account of the general benefits they confer on the community they ought not to be taxed like other property holders. There is the best of reason for apprehending that the companies will seek to influence the convention to so modify the existing provisions regarding taxation as to leave a discretion with the Legislature to make special exemptions in the case of railroad corporations.
We ought to ask ourselves which of these tickets before us embraces the names of men most likely to be pressed into the service of these corporations to the betrayal and injury of private taxpayers. An examination into the present relations of some of the candidates to one great corporation will afford a partial answer.
We earnestly urge good men and true in every voting precinct of the county to be early and all day at the polls Thursday, and to watch most closely for trickery and fraud. See that not one voter is cheated out of the honest expression of his views. See that every ticket is closely inspected. We are satisfied that if a fair election is had every man on our ticket may be elected, and we insist that nothing be left undone to get a fair expression of the people's will.
