PORTLAND NAACP

The first meeting for the fiscal year of the Portland branch NAACP was held Jan. 19, 4 P.M. at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Mr. George L. Thomas, newly elected president, stated aims of the branch Association in three proposals.

1. To work for the good of all.
2. To maintain respect for all.
3. To maintain constant vigilance against those of our own group and those of other groups who would deny us our God given rights.

Prefacing the proposals, Mr. Thomas read quotations from Gunnar Myrdal in American Dilemma who gives 18 pages to NAACP - four times more than the next agency working for Negro rights. He opens in this manner, 'The NAACP is without question the most important agency for the Negroes in their struggle against caste.' He closes with this statement, 'As the Negro masses are becoming educated and more articulate and as the Negro protest is rising, this courageous organization with its experienced and cautious tactics will be able to count on increasing support.'
