PROSPECTUS OF THE

SOUTHERN ECLECTIC.

J. L. FITTES AND JAMES M. SMYTHE, EDITORS.

This work, the first number of which was issued in March, 1853, is composed mainly of Selections from the Periodical Literature of Great Britain, France, Germany, and the United States—chiefly, however, from that of Great Britain. In addition to American Journals, we have ordered and are constantly receiving by mail, the following European publications:

The Magazine we now deliver to the public is the first attempt to introduce to the great body of readers ready made and adapted to their wants the rare wealth of European literature.

As such it is intended to supply a want long deeply felt and a long

cherished project of our publishers.

We only add that while we are giving the selections and reviews of all respectable kind known to man, we shall impart our own to make it in every respect equal to the vaunted Northern.
