ALTER'S STATEMENT
He Says He Kept Only What He Was Entitled To.

Constable Henry Alter was yesterday seen by a "Record-Union" reporter regarding a published statement to the effect that Groceryman John Dierssen intended to swear out a warrant charging him with embezzlement.

According to the published account a man named N. Dean had secured a sum aggregating $450 from Dierssen representing that with the money he had closed a deal with a man named Quiggle, who owed Dierssen money, for his ranch. Dierssen learned that Dean was in Seattle, and Dierssen sent Alter after him, allowing $75 for expenses.

The article referred to stated that Alter worked a bluff on Dean with some unsigned requisition papers and induced him to pay over $115 and $40 for expenses, and that in settling with Dierssen he made no reference to the $40 received as expense money.

Alter says there is absolutely no truth in the latter part of the statement. He said that he had told Dierssen that he believed he could make the trip to Seattle at an expense of $80, and that the latter had scratched around and got $70.

Alter said he took the money with the understanding that if the expense bill reached a higher figure Dierssen was to stand it. He says that as a matter of fact his expenses reached $88.50, or $13.50 more than Dierssen had advanced to him; that he collected from Dean $155; that he turned over to Dierssen $126, receiving a receipt for the same; that he retained $13.50, the amount of his expenses over the $75 advanced by Dierssen, and that he deducted his commission, 10 per cent., or $15, and that the latter sum is every cent he received for his services.
