San Francisco, Aug. 30.--The trial of F. Drew Caminetti, charged with violating the Mann act, stands adjourned till Tuesday. On that day Maury I. Diggs, companion of Caminetti on their trip from Sacramento to Reno, Nev., with Maude Warrington and Lola Norris, will be sentenced, having been convicted last week.

The effort of the defense has been to prove that Caminetti played a passive part in the trip to Reno. One passage of the cross-examination of Maude Warrington is representative of its whole trend.

"At the meeting between Diggs, Caminetti, Miss Norris and yourself on the Saturday before you left for Reno--the meeting at which you two girls agreed to go--Mr. Diggs did all the talking and Mr. Caminetti sat by and agreed to everything by keeping quiet. Is that the way you wish to be understood?"

"Mr. Caminetti agreed to every thing."

"But he agreed passively, did he not?"

Here the court interrupted. "Is your theory, Mr. Rowse," Judge Van Fleet asked, "that Mr. Caminetti was taken along also?"

"Our theory is, your honor, that Mr. Caminetti had nothing to do with taking these girls to Reno. The party went and he went along with it. We don't contend that he was abducted but we hold that, because of certain conditions, that party of four found it necessary to leave Sacramento without delay and took the first train, without regard to its destination."

Against this contention was the testimony of Miss Warrington that Caminetti had furnished the money for the trip, and that he had given $20 of it to Lola Norris, out of which to buy her passage. In this statement, and in her repeated affirmations that Caminetti had agreed to everything Diggs had proposed, the witness was not shaken.

Lola Norris will follow her on the stand.
