BOSTON.
Yesterday being the anniversary appointed by the Royal Charter for the election of his Majesty's Councillors of the province, the Great and General Court or Assembly of the province met at the State House in this town. After the usual oaths were administered to the gentlemen who were returned to serve as members of the honourable House of Representatives, and the declarations subscribed by them, they elected the Hon. Thomas Cushing, Esq; for their Speaker, who being presented to his Excellency the Governor for his approbation, according to the direction of the Royal explanatory Charter, his Excellency was pleased to send a message in writing to the House, signifying his approbation of said election. The House then made choice of Mr. Samuel Adams, for their Clerk. After which the Governor, and Council for last year, with the honourable House of Representatives, were attended to the Old Brick Meeting-House by his Excellency's company of Cadets, where a very excellent discourse was preached by the Rev. Gad Hitchcock, of Pembroke, from these words in Proverbs xxix, 2. When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked bear rule, the people mourn. After sermon the company of Cadets, with their band of music, escorted his Excellency Governor Gage, attended by the Secretary, high Sheriff, members of his Majesty's Council and House of Representatives, the Officers of the troop of horse, company of Artillery, Grenadiers, and other militia officers, with a large number of the clergy, and other gentlemen, to Faneuil-Hall, where an elegant entertainment was provided. After dinner many loyal toasts were drank. The guns in the several batteries were fired on the occasion.
