In January of 1950, secretaries of the Seattle Urban League conferred with administrative officers of the Atomic Energy Commission and the General Electric Company at Richland, Washington. As a result of these conferences, 26 clerical and professional persons, as electrical engineers; accountants; labor relations personnel; stenographers; secretaries; clerks; and clerk typists, had been referred to Richland for employment. As of the date of this writing, 6 of the group are in the process of being considered for employment at the Atomic Energy Commission at Richland.
Growing out of the same conference, was the Urban League recruitment effort for construction workers who had worked in the construction program at Richland for the A. J. Jones Construction Company, during 1947, 1948, and 1949. While in Richland, the Urban League had been advised that the new construction program for the Atomic Commission would employ some 14,000 construction workers. Persons who had worked on the project in 1947, 1948, and 1949 for the A. J. Construction Company, were eligible for reemployment. In January and February, the Urban League called in some 280 persons who had been formerly employed at Richland.
During the latter part of February and the month of March, these persons, together with some 170 additional persons who had been employed at Richland, and who came voluntarily to the offices of the Urban League, were directed to seek their old jobs at Richland.
As of this writing, the Urban League has been unofficially advised that more than 200 of the number interviewed during January, February, and March, have secured employment at Richland.
After May 1st, through August 1st, the Seattle Urban League will make an intensive effort to recruit personnel, who were not formerly employed at Richland, but persons interested in entering the construction labor force for employment at Richland. As of April 15, some 322 of these persons have visited the Urban League office and indicated their interest in work in the construction program at Richland.
