The VA has come out with two rulings that may benefit families of deceased veterans drawing monthly death payments under the New Survivors' Benefit Act said W. E. Pinialis, officer in charge of the VA Key West Office.
These payments, said Pinialis, are based on the military pay grade of the veteran while he was in service before he died.
VA's first ruling is that it will compute the death benefits on current military pay scales even though the veteran served before pay was raised to present levels.
Take the case of a private, said Pinialis. He may have received a dollar a day back in the "old days" but the VA will base the death payments on what a private earns today - which is a lot more.
The second ruling, said Pinialis, is that minor children of deceased veterans will be eligible for the new Survivors Benefit payments, even though there is no eligible widow. In the case where a child's mother dies or remarries, the child still can get the new payments, said Pinialis.
