Full Text
A friend who has always been a consistent supporter of General Jackson, has reminded us that the statement in our last, that nine tenths of the people of New England, are opposed to the General, is incorrect. We were speaking rather with reference to the state of parties before it was known that Mr. Adams would be beaten, and intended that the expression should be construed hyperbolically rather than literally. Taking the votes in New England for the basis of the calculation, there appears to be about one in our rather more, in favor of the General. This, however, does not affect the principle for which we were contending, that it would be highly indecorous in General Jackson, before he assumes the Presidency, to exhibit himself in New England, where so large a majority of the people were opposed to his elevation. Suppose Mr. Adams had been re-elected and taken a trip to Tennessee? Would it not have been regarded as an insult to the people of that State?
