Full Text
The Atlanta Police Department is presently purchasing new motorized equipment, and in the process, at least one new job has been opened up for a Negro policeman.
The new equipment coming in is new patrol wagon used to transport prisoners from the spot of an alleged crime to the gates of City Jail.
The new patrol wagons already in service is painted black, according to reliable information, to replace the aged red-colored vehicle formerly in service.
When the new wagon was delivered last Friday, it was assigned to the Negro police detail. Patrolman R. A. Knight reportedly volunteered to became the first driver of the new vehicle and got the assignment.
The wagon for the Negro squad was reportedly requested by their commanding officer, Capt. E. B. Brooks. Designating one of the wagons for the Negro detail is aimed according to reports, to help speed up service in the areas where Negro patrolmen work.
Knight was driving the wagon throughout the Northwest section of Atlanta Saturday night, and perhaps in other areas. The tenure of Knight's present assignment is apparently indefinite. He will apparently remain in the drivers' seat of the new patrol wagon until another Negro officer is assigned to the vehicle.
