VIRGINIA ELECTIONS.
The election of Members for the National and State Legislature in this District, closed with the Norfolk Borough election, which was held yesterday.
The general result is as follows:
For Congress.
Newton. Whitehead.
Princess Anne, majority 81
Nansemond, do. 176
Norfolk county, do. 168
Norfolk borough, do. 124
468
81
—387
The result of this election speaks like a voice of thunder to the enemies of the union; it shews them the pure principles of republicanism, triumphant at the very point where they were deemed most accessible to the poisonous shafts of faction. It proves that in a just cause, THE PEOPLE will support the government of their country, tho'their lives, their fortunes, their all, save liberty and honor. should be the sacrifice. Here it was, that the gorgon head of faction reared its proud crest, anticipating victory from the stormy aspect of the times—a powerful and threatening foe on the one hand; the perils and hardships of a military life, and a separation (perhaps forever) from all the endearing comforts and connexions of domestic life, on the other; against such a trial the aspiring junto, cherished a hope that the firmness and patriotism of the people were not proof. But how were they mistaken! The Citizen Soldier, against whom all the evils of the war bore with their utmost violence, came forth from the "tentel field" and gave his suffrage for the candidate who voted for the war, and who stands pledged to support it to an honorable and successful conclusion. Can the sophisms of demagogues avail against such practical patriotism? Instead of the people having been shaken from their honest sentiments. by specious arguments and the calamities of the times, they have absolutely gathered strength and unanimity. At the contested election in 1809. when we were at peace, and indulging in the enchanting prospects opened to us by Erskine's treacherous arrangement, the majority for the republican candidate in the whole district, was 352, the whole number of votes given being 1750. Now the majority is increased to 387, when the total number of votes owing to a large requisition of the militia from the counties of Princess Anne and Nansemond, being ordered out on duty, is only 1307.—Now let us see what the republican gain is since the declaration of war, simply by the rule of three; and if 1307 produces 387 we shall find that 1750, (presumed to be the strength of the district) will produce 518, which would inevitably have been the republican majority if every one could have voted; leaving a nett gain of 166 (or, in mercantile phrase, about 50 per cent)— the war, and admiral Warren's blockade, to the contrary notwithstanding.
The votes for Senator and Representative to State Legislature stood thus :
ASSEMBLY.
Richard H. Lee (R.) 184
William Maxwell, 50
Majority for Lee 134
SENATE.
Joseph Godwin, 153
John Nivison* 32
A poll was opened for Mr. Nivison without his approbation.
Joseph Godwin is elected in the district without any material opposition.
Never was there a more finished triumph of correct principles, than this election has given rise to. It was predicted by the opposition party, that "the people would see their error; the operation of the measures of the administration would open their eyes;" no prediction was ever more fully verified; the eyes of many, very many of those who were led astray by the deceptive light of modern federalism, were indeed opened upon the occasion, and they manifested an ample conviction of their error by voting for the republican candidate.
