County Bills Passed By 1941 Legislature

Approximately 75 bills affecting Montgomery County were passed during the 1941 session of the Maryland Legislature.

Outstanding were bills giving the county complete control of the sale of beer and increasing the police force.

Probably most controversial of the bills passed is the one legalizing pari-mutuel betting on Jai Alai in Montgomery county.

Understood to be of Cuban origin, the game is played by two contestants who propel a ball against walls for points. Betting is on the number of points a contestant makes.

Proponents of the measure claim it would bring approximately 250,000 into the county annually.

Civic and religious organizations are opposing the bill. An amendment authorizing a referendum was added to the bill before passage in the State Senate.
